The virgin suicides, le livre
 Tout le monde connaît le film de Sofia Coppola, « The Virgin suicides » : au début des années 70, cinq sœurs se suicident, sans raison apparente. L’histoire est racontée sous forme d’enquête-souvenir, menée par un groupe d’hommes qui ont connu les sœurs Lisbon durant leur adolescence.
Je viens de finir le livre de Jeffrey Eugenides, dont le film est adapté, et j’ai adoré. Voilà pourquoi : Vous vous souvenez de la musique d’Air dans le film, qui donne ce côté « dreamy », vaporeux ? Jeffrey Eugenides parvient à rendre exactement la même impression en insistant sur des petits détails sensoriels : les bruits, les odeurs…Il arrive ainsi à créer un univers surréel, où seul la mort vient rappeler les personnages à la réalité. La souffrance des sœurs Lisbon n’est pas exprimée directement : pas de pleurs, de cris…Mais l’impression d’une « chape de plomb », qui les empêche de grandir, n’en est que plus vive. Finalement, les adolescentes refusent qu’il y ait un autre monde, en dehors de leur famille (pourtant assez sordide!) J’adore le personnage de Lux (jouée par Kirsten Dunst dans le film). Pas du tout le cliché de l’adolescente nympho, mais au fond en recherche d’affection. Il y a plus que ça chez Lux : un mal être profond…
Dernier chose : si vous connaissez des (bons) livres tirés de films (ou l’inverse), let me know ! Il paraît que « The Shining » de Stephen King est génial, mais je l’ai pas encore lu…

De lui j'ai lu Middlesex et j'avoue que, si le début était excellent, le livre s'essouflait très rapidement. Cela ressemblait trop à "America, America", de Kazan.
La liste des bons livres qui ont fait des films serait trop longue. Par contre, je propose deux livres faibles qui ont donné d'excellents films (phénomène bien plus rare que l'inverse) : Fight Club de Chuck Palahniuk et The End of the Affair (La fin d'une liaison) de Graham Greene.

En dehors de la thématique de départ sur la migration vers les Etats-Unis, les deux livres, passée la page 100, n'ont rapidement plus rien à voir.
Sinon, il parait que l'adaptation cinématographique de "Tout est illuminé" de Safran Foer est ratée. Vraiment dommage !

@ philippe : développe. Faible car la fin est nulle (excellente dans le film), faible car il est très mal écrit (il voulait manifestement copier Amy Hempel), faible car l'atmosphère d'oppression et de réclusion mentale est mal rendue. Chuck est le roi du pitch génial, mais ce n'est pas un écrivain. Il ferait bien mieux d'écrire des scénarios.
@ garrincha : il y a tout de même plus que la migration, qui est mineure, il y a surtout la mythologie personnelle du migrant, qui est au coeur du livre.

Le film, porté par la très bonne (comme d'hab) interprétation de Julianne Moore, est très en-dessous. Trop illustratif, justement.

Bien au contraire. Dans le livre, Greene est passé à côté de la montre en or : plutôt que de scinder la narration lors de l'éclatement de la bombe et ne faire connaître que le point de vue d'un seul personnage à la fois, traitement qui s'est révélé particulièrement fécond dans le film (plus sous l'angle comique que tragique, je te l'accorde, mais de toute façon aucun des deux n'est présent dans le livre), il décide de dérouler directement l'histoire des deux personnages et de ne laisser aucune possibilité de quiproquo. De plus, le personnage du positiviste est convenu et l'influence qu'il a sur Sarah s'explique mal, on dirait un deus ex machina (tout comme le passage où Bendrix consulte le journal intime de Sarah, procédé narratif qui gâche tout). Enfin, la relation à sous-entendus homosexuels entre Bendrix et Henry Miles est une formidable trouvaille du film.

--> Gadrel : la fin du livre n'est pas nulle, mais celle du film est meilleure et surtout + spectaculaire. (Relis les dernières pages, la version écrite et la version filmée ne sont pas si différentes l'une de l'autre, au fond).
"Fight Club" très mal écrit ? Je ne peux pas encaisser ça ! Style percutant, phrases acérées, une syntaxe tout en uppercuts : Chuck a fait très fort (trop fort d'ailleurs, le reste de sa prod' n'atteignant pas le niveau de ce premier opus).
J'ai lu Amy Hempel. Je sais que Chuck est un super fan de ce qu'elle fait, mais à aucun moment je n'ai trouvé une quelconque ressemblance entre "Fight Club" et les livres de la miss... Par contre, il s'est pas mal inspiré de Dick et de son "Substance Mort", et ça se voit grave.
Chuck Palahniuk pas un écrivain ? Rien qu'avec "Fight Club", il a prouvé qu'il en était un. Et un IMMENSE en plus. Il aurait pû tout arrêter après ce bouquin.

Attention ! Le "Shining" de King n'arrive pas à la cheville de son adaptation par Kubrick.
Je te fais le pitch : Jack Torrance est un alcoolique violent qui a déjà frappé son fils, une fois, et que le manque d'alcool et la culpabilité font peu à peu délirer. Le tout sans la moindre épaisseur : que de la technique (bien maîtrisée par ailleurs) pour faire tourner les pages, puis un grand vide une fois la dernière page (vite) lue.
On en ressort avec l'idée qu'on aurait mieux fait de le voir en téléfilm. D'ailleurs, un téléfilm en a été tiré APRES le film de Kubrick, que King trouvait trop éloigné de son "oeuvre".
Moralité : pour faire un bon film, autant partir d'un mauvais livre et en faire ce qu'on veut...

Sinon dans les films que j'aime bien adapté de bouquin il y : Carrie de King, La foire aux vanités, fight club,cruel intentions même si il est loin de ressembler vraimment au liaisons dangereuses la version avec Malkovich est superbe.
