 Voilà qui va plaire au plus dandy des habitués de ce blog (deathpoe, ou Mike pour les intimes...): Tom Wolfe, le plus grand écrivain américain après BEE, a confié ses habitudes vestimentaires à Beigbeder: smoking blanc, voiture blanche, sièges de voiture blancs... Apparemment, Beigbeder l'a traité de "vieux maquereau", mais il ne s'est pas vexé. Quel classe, ce Tom Wolfe!
Je ne connais pas beaucoup d'auteurs qui, à plus de 75 ans, prendraient le risque de décrire la vie des étudiants actuels: sexe et vomi, pour résumer. Charlotte Simmons, l'héroïne de son dernier roman, est le type même de la jeune pucelle, qui débarque de sa province natale pour aller étudier dans une prestigieuse université "Ivy League". Mais l'épanouissement intellectuel n'est pas vraiment au rendez-vous... Pour être parfaitement honnête, j'ai préféré "A man in full" et "The bonfires of the vanities", les romans précédents de Tom Wolfe. C'est un "story teller" formidable (raconteur d'histoires, ça ne fait pas terrible en français...) Dernière chose: Wolfe a droit à un véritable culte de personnalité aux Etats-Unis (couverture du Time magazine,...), alors qu'il est moins connu que Paul Auster en France. A vous de réparer cette injustice...
